Yakima United FC Sets Sights on National Stage With U.S. Open Cup Qualifying

After establishing itself as one of the most successful amateur clubs in Washington, Yakima United FC is turning its attention to a new challenge: the U.S. Open Cup.

For Yakima United general manager Teresa Vega, qualifying for the nation’s premier domestic soccer tournament represents an opportunity that extends beyond the results on the field. The tournament gives amateur players the chance to test themselves against higher-level competition while representing the Yakima Valley on a national stage.

“Competing in the U.S. Open Cup offers amateur teams like Yakima United FC a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play against the best in the country, gain experience, represent our community and inspire the next generation,” Vega said.

Yakima United enters the competition with plenty of recent success behind it. Over the past four years, the club’s players have won six combined titles in the Evergreen Premier League of Washington and Washington State Adult Soccer Association Super Cup.

That success has motivated the club to pursue something different.

“Our players have been very successful playing in the EPLWA and the WSASA Super Cup the past four years, winning six titles combined, and they wanted to set their eyes on something different — something national,” Vega said. “A national tournament provides exposure for our players and gives them a taste of what the next level brings.”

The U.S. Open Cup also provides a unique learning experience for an amateur club. Facing teams from different levels forces players and coaches to adapt tactically, physically and mentally while testing their discipline against unfamiliar opponents.

Yakima United also has a connection to the tournament’s history.

The Yakima Reds previously advanced through the U.S. Open Cup qualifying rounds before traveling to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for a professional-round matchup. Although Yakima was eliminated, the experience remains part of the local soccer community’s history.

That connection continues today, with some current Yakima United players being the children of players who represented the Yakima Reds in Harrisburg.

“The experience and memories of that trip are still talked about today,” Vega said. “Some of our current Yakima United players are the offspring of players who represented the Yakima Reds in the Harrisburg game.”

With the tournament featuring a single-elimination format, every match carries significant importance. Yakima United expects the qualifying rounds to provide a difficult test while also creating the possibility of an upset.

“Because the U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination format, YUFC expects the qualifying rounds to be very competitive, potentially producing thrilling upsets,” Vega said. “We are preparing physically and mentally to advance through these rounds.”

For fans, the appeal will be seeing Yakima United potentially face opponents it has never encountered before. The uncertainty surrounding the qualifying rounds is part of what makes the competition compelling for the club and its supporters.

“Preparing for the unknown is different, challenging and rewarding,” Vega said. “YUFC has a great group of players who are UNITED in their belief that they can compete with and succeed against the best.”

Beyond competition, the club sees the U.S. Open Cup as an opportunity to strengthen the connection between Yakima United and the community it represents. Advancing in the tournament could bring national attention to the Yakima Valley while creating new memories for players and supporters.

“The U.S. Open Cup gives smaller clubs like YUFC a chance to challenge big-name teams if they advance,” Vega said. “It is a great way to boost local pride, represent the Yakima Valley and create some very memorable stories.”

As qualifying approaches, Yakima United is embracing the challenge and the uncertainty that comes with entering a national tournament. For a club accustomed to success at the regional level, the U.S. Open Cup offers a chance to find out how far that success can carry it.

And for Yakima United, the goal is clear: compete, represent the Yakima Valley and see what happens when an ambitious amateur club takes its shot on the national stage.
